The sizes German application photos usually use — and how to produce them from your own picture without uploading it anywhere.

There is no legal size for a German application photo. In practice printed CV photos are 4 × 5 cm, 4.5 × 6 cm or 5 × 7 cm, in portrait orientation, and increasingly a digital file is all that is needed.

Pixel sizes and file size

At 300 DPI, 4 × 5 cm is 472 × 591 pixels, 4.5 × 6 cm is 531 × 709 pixels and 5 × 7 cm is 591 × 827 pixels. For a PDF or an online form, 600 to 1000 pixels on the long edge is plenty; many portals cap the file at a few hundred KB.
